  • Elevated T4 are seen in patients with overt hyperthyroidism while depressed T4 levels are seen in overt hypothyroidism.

  • T4 levels are altered by physiological or pathological changes in thyroxin binding protein capacity. The result should be use in conjunction with clinical impression and results of other thyroid tests.

  • Performance of this assay has not been established with neonatal specimens.

  • Specimens from the patients who have received preparations of mouse monoclonal antibodies may contain human antimouse antibody (HAMA) such specimen may show falsely elevated or depressed results. Serum containing antithyroxin antibody cannot be measured accurately without interference.

Associated Test:

  • TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) Test: TSH levels are usually measured alongside T4 levels to assess thyroid function more comprehensively. TSH helps regulate the production of T4 by the thyroid gland.
